Primarily a temple town, Somnath is an important pilgrimage and tourist spot in Gujarat. It is named after the renowned Somnath Temple, which is believed to be the first among the twelve jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva. This is one of the most revered sites for the Hindus. Somnath, literally meaning 'lord of the moon, is another name for Lord Shiva. While the original temple was built in ancient times, the temple has been ruined and reconstructed several times during the course of history. Tales of its riches attracted a series of invasions, but each time the temple was invaded and destroyed, it was restored to its original glory by pious Hindu devotees. The present temple, built in 1951, is the seventh reconstruction on the original site. The temple has been constructed in the Chalukyan style with a nearly 50 m tall shikhara.
Besides the Somnath Temple and Somnath Beach, which are the primary places to visit here, there are some other places that are worth visiting, like Gita Mandir, Bhalka Tirth, Kamnath Mahadev Temple, and Prabhas Patan Museum. The Gir National Park (Sasan-Gir) is hardly 40 km away from Somnath.
