Pondicherry, also known as "Pondy", now officially called Puducherry, is a union territory of India located in southern India. It lies on the coast of the Bay of Bengal and is surrounded by the state of Tamil Nadu with which it shares most of its culture and language.
Though quite small in area, Pondicherry was the largest French colony in India. It has a long and interesting history of trade and war. Being a former French colony, there is a strong French influence in the city, especially in the old quarters, with rues and boulevards lined with Mediterranean-style houses, cafes, and bakeries; however, the city remains very much Indian.
French is still understood, and the whole city of Puducherry makes for a rather pleasant mix of India and the West. It is also called "The French Riviera of the East". Just strolling down these streets, can give the traveler an insight into the quaint charm of Pondicherry. Visit the gorgeous seaside promenade, where the Bay of Bengal playfully splashes the shores of the famous Rock beach.
