Perched along the edge of majestic 15m-high red laterite cliffs, 50 km northwest of Trivandrum, Varkala has a naturally beautiful setting that has allowed it to steadily grow into one of Kerala's most popular beach destinations. These cliffs are a unique geological feature on the otherwise flat Kerala coast and are known among geologists as Varkala Formation. The cliffs have been declared a national geological monument by the Geological Survey of India for their protection, maintenance, and promotion of geo-tourism. There are numerous natural water spouts and spas on the sides of these cliffs.
Varkala is also famous for the 2,018-year-old Janardana Swami Temple (AKA Dakshin Kashi). With some of the best pristine beaches, hills, lakes, forts, lighthouses, natural fisheries, and springs, all of this together makes Varkala a little paradise.
