Athirappilly, a village in the Thrissur district of Kerala state, is located 70 km northeast of Kochi city. Athirappilly Falls, the biggest attraction of Athirappilly, is a marvelous cascade of frothy waters that makes its way from the Anamudi mountains of the Western Ghats. Also called Bahubali Waterfall, this 80 ft high and 330 ft wide fall is the largest waterfall in Kerala. It is often referred to as the "Niagara Falls of India". Another popular waterfall to visit in Athirappilly is the Vazhachal Falls.
Athirappilly greets you with the sight of charming green Sholayar Peaks overlooking the rushing gush of the falls. Many endangered and endemic species of flora and fauna are found in the forests of the Athirapilly-Vazhachal area. This area is the only place in the Western Ghats where four endangered hornbill species are seen. The Western Ghats is one of the most important biodiversity hot spots in the world.
