Alleppey (AKA Alappuzha) is an important tourist destination in India. It is considered to be one of the oldest planned towns with a lighthouse built on the coast of Kerala state. Lord Curzon praised the place by describing it as the “Venice of the East”. Bordering the Laccadive Sea, it is known for its wide network of interlinking, palm-fringed canals called backwaters and rejuvenating Ayurvedic resorts. The place boasts of natural beauty in its amazing lagoons and lakes connecting it to the web of backwaters.
The famous backwaters and magnificent beaches make Alleppey a popular tourist attraction in Kerala. Towards the shore lies the Alleppey (Alappuzha) Beach in the Arabian Sea, a beautiful example of the gems you’d find along the Malabar Coast.
One can board a houseboat cruise to view the serenity, beautiful landscapes, well-planned towns, and numerous temples and churches on these backwaters. Alappuzha is also the pivot point for the world-renowned annual Nehru Trophy Boat Race, held in the second week of August.
