51 km east of Darjeeling, Kalimpong is a beautiful hill station on the Shivalik ranges (foothills of the Himalayas) at an altitude of 1250 m and overlooking the Teesta Valley. The town center is on a ridge connecting two hills, Deolo Hill and Durpin Hill. It is renowned for its panoramic valley views, Buddhist monasteries, churches, and Tibetan handicraft.
Until the mid-19th century, the area around Kalimpong was ruled in succession by the Sikkimese and Bhutanese kingdoms. The area was sparsely populated by the indigenous Lepcha community and migrant Bhutia and Limbu tribes.
Dotted with ancient Buddhist monasteries, centuries-old churches, and exquisite revered temples, Kalimpong marks Bhutanese history till it was wrested by British rule. The Jang Dong Palriffo Brang (Durpin Monastery) and Thongsa Gompa (Bhutanese Monastery) are some famous places to visit.
