About 116 kms from Gangtok in North Sikkim, Lachung is situated at an altitude of 8,850 ft (2700 m). The word Lachung means "small pass" in the local language. The picturesque mountain village embraced by snow capped mountain peaks, breathtaking waterfalls, sparkling streams and apple orchards, is the perfect off-beat holiday destination. It is sprawled across the banks of the Lachung River which slices the village in two.

Lachung is famous for its apples, peaches and apricots. Most of Lachung's inhabitants are of Lepcha and Tibetan descent. The residents of Lachung call themselves Lachungpas. During winter the town is usually covered in snow. Lachung is also the base camp for Rhododendron Valley Trek which starts from Yumthang Valley and ends at Lachen Valley.
