The capital city of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal is located in the central part of the Indian Subcontinent. Bhopal has a rich and diverse historical background which is a treasure trove of art and culture. In the early 18th century, Bhopal was a small village in the local Gond kingdom.
The modern Bhopal city was established by Dost Mohammad Khan (1672–1728), an Afghan soldier in the Mughal army. Between 1819 and 1926, Bhopal was ruled by four women Begums – unique in the royalty of those days – under British suzerainty. Qudsia Begum was the first woman ruler.
Several dynasties have left their mark on Bhopal city in the form of forts built by the Rajputs, Afghans, and the Mughals silently speaking of the battles, victories, and failures of the past era. These icons are testimony to the grandeur of past and important archeological sites.
