Rameshwaram is a small island in the Gulf of Mannar. It is the holiest place in the Tamil Nadu region. Rameshwara means “Lord of Rama” in Sanskrit, an epithet of Shiva. It is the most renowned pilgrim place situated on a beautiful island in the lower side of India.
According to Hindu mythology this is the place where lord Rama created a bridge across the sea to Sri Lanka. The destination has several wonderful ancient temples. Rameshwaram temple is renowned for its magnificent corridors which is longest in the world and huge sculptured pillars.
Rameshwaram is also a great fishing centre of Tamil Nadu. Rameshwaram with its mythological history can amuse anyone. This is the place where lord Rama worshiped lord Shiva to absolve any sin that he might have committed during his epic battle against Ravana.
