Periyar is an important tourist destination of Kerala State. It is mostly famous for its national park, home to mainly elephants and tigers along with gaur, sambar, Indian giant squirrel, nilgiri langur, endangered lion-tailed macaque and many others.
It’s a peaceful place with serene environmental condition, healthy air, picturesque manmade Periyar Lake at the heart of the national park, Chellar Kovil with its churches beautiful waterfalls and cascades, and famous ancient temple of Mangala Devi of ninth century.
Murikkady located nearby Periyar is also a must watch place with beautiful panorama of cardamom, pepper, tea and coffee plantations.
The Idukki Dam, one of the highest Arch dams of Asia, is constructed on Periyar River between two mountains. This dam was constructed along with two more dams making an artificial lake in between.
